Dear
WANZeGRAM Fan,
|
|
We can't change the past.
We can't predict the future.
So why not live in the moment?

We celebrate the spirit and
achievements of Shaun White! (But
aren't you glad you are not under
that kind of pressure?)
You're just a regular live-a-day kind of
person who doesn't require Olympic gold
to revel in a moment.

Be an Olympian unto yourself,
whether on the beach, or in your
back yard, or in the bedroom! Create
your own personal best performance
today (or tonight). Seize the
moment!

Leave yourself wide open to laughter
today! Seize the moment!

Jump for Joy. If you don't feel joyous,
grab hold of a friend and jump anyway.
Create the joy and seize the moment!

Take Val's advice and create your own
moment by blowing bubbles. All it takes
is a quick trip to the dollar store and
a little a breath to seize the moment.
Wishing you a happy Friday and a weekend
filled with happy moments...they are out
there just waiting for you to seize
them!

New Wanzie Comedy
Opens March 13 / Tickets Now On Sale! |
|
Wanzie continues the Ladies of Eola
Heights Saga
With His Newest Orlando-Based Play:
55
WEST
A High Rise
Church Street Comedy
Our resident Playwright
Michael Wanzie will once again take
to the stage as Pearl Locksdale, along with
Frank McClain as Physiatrist Dr.
Robert Burroughs, and Miss Sammy
playing herself, in 55 WEST: A High Rise
Church Street Comedy opening on
Saturday, March 13, at the Footlight
Theatre.
In this, his third
sequel to the original Ladies of Eola
Heights (which broke all box office
records at the 170 seat Footlight Theatre
during its unprecedented 9-month run in
2005), Wanzie pares the cast down to 3
onstage performers as the action of this
installment moves from the old clapboard
house on Cathcart Street to Orlando's newest
condo tower located at 55 West Church
Street.
In this new
stand-alone comedy (which can be enjoyed
whether or not theater-goers are familiar
with the previous 3 plays), Pearl can see a
lot through her binoculars from her
high-rise patio perch!
It seems the Ladies
have taken the advice of their psychiatrist
(COURT ORDERED THERAPY: Ladies of Eola
Heights Part 3) and have sold the old
family home. However, brother Jackson is
dead, sister Ruby has gone to New York to
seek fame and fortune on the Great White
Way, and sister Opal is off on her
doctor-prescribed cruise. Thus Pearl has had
to make the move into the family's new
Church Street digs on her own. The good
doctor (now Ruby's husband) has moved in to
keep Pearl company until the return of her
siblings. The two soon discover that Pearl's
penchant for getting others to drink along
with her is no match for the doctor's need
to preserve client-patient confidentiality.
Orlando notables
ranging from Theater Critic and Arts Blogger
Elizabeth Maupin to Orlando City
Commissioner Daisy Lynum; from
Realtor ® David Dorman to columnist
Billy Manes, along with many other
familiar people and Orlando locales all
figure into the dialogue and laughs in this
2-person, hi-camp comedy punctuated with
novelty lip-sync routines performed by
Orlando's most widely recognizable drag
persona Miss Sammy. (You can't go anywhere
they serve liquor without running into her!)
The play will be
staged by Wanzie Presents' Artistic Director
Kenny Howard.
55 WEST: A High Rise Church Street Comedy
will be presented Saturday evenings only,
March 13 through April 3, 2010. Tickets
($12) go on sale today, Friday, February 27,
2010, exclusively through the WANZIE.com
online box office.
Opening night tickets
include meet & greet reception in the Pool
Bar with complimentary hors d' oeuvres and
cake!
All show tickets
include complimentary club cover for the
remainder of the same evening.

Master Hypnotist Jon
Simon Returns to PH for Mardi Gras! |
|
In
the spirit of Mardi Gras and the
mystique of old New Orleans' Voo Doo,
Wanzie Presents is pleased to announce a
command performance by Master Hypnotist
Jon Simon as the perfect complement to
the Parliament House's Annual Mardi Gras
Party & Parade.
Master Simon
transfixed and delighted audiences when
he made his Parliament House debut 3
years ago. Since then he has performed
at fairs and festivals virtually
everywhere, and specifically for gay
audiences at Pride South in Fort
Lauderdale and First Coast Pride in
Jacksonville. He has also appeared at
Wild Adventures Theme Park in Georgia,
and is a favorite on the college campus
entertainment circuit.
Tickets to this comedic and entrancing
show, which is being presented on
Saturday, March 6, are priced at only
$10, so it's a no-brainer to make the
happy decision to come out early that
night to see the 8 PM hypnotism, if
indeed you were planning on attending
the Mardi Gras Party and Parade that
same evening, anyway. The ticket price
for the comedy Hypnosis show includes
complementary cover for the rest of the
evening. Since the cover for Mardi Gras
is also $10, it's like getting the
Hypnosis show absolutely FREE!
Your ticket purchase for the Hypnosis
Show Includes Mardi Gras!
During the show, volunteers are selected
from the audience and become the
hypnotist's subjects; many, of whom,
will indeed find themselves under the
Master's Control.

As Simon Sez, you
may "See the show, or BE the show!" The
Master goes on to remind us, "If you
volunteer, please be warned: what you
don't remember, your friends will never
forget!"
Wanzie (who was born on March 6) will be
in attendance as part of his official
53rd birthday celebration. Come out and
join Wanzie and the entire WANZeGRAM
staff for this most entertaining evening
of hypnotic entertainment!

My Two Cents:
|
|
Chris
Salvatore is a whore!
I
mean this in a completely positive way
and he should continue on this journey.
He possesses a quality that so many of
us should stop and admire, noting that
he, himself, is pretty easy to admire.
I had the
privilege of being in an intimate
setting for a viewing of Eating Out:
All You Can Eat in Orlando at the
Footlight Theatre this past week as a
fundraising event for Gay American
Heroes, which is raising money for a
national traveling rainbow memorial to
showcase LGBT men and women that have
been murdered for simply being gay, and
Orlando Youth Alliance. After the
screening, Salvatore stepped out on
stage, looking a little like the Zits
comic strip character Jeremy Duncan, to
take questions from the audience. His
confidence, honesty and heartfelt
answers to questions about the movie,
himself, his community service and the
PSA
he created for the evening's cause was
exemplary.
Chris Salvatore is
himself, a hero because he presents
himself as, well, himself, nothing more,
nothing less. He's an actor and singer,
who happens to be gay and he doesn't
hide it or flaunt it. He doesn't have a
big rainbow flag flapping from his butt;
he doesn't wave around a limp wrist or
end every sentence in a high-pitched "guuuurrrlll".
Salvatore is doing
what each and every gay man and woman
should be doing; just being
themselves. He's not pretending to be
something he's not in straight
Hollywood, that historically doesn't
like to cast gay actors. I say that if
you, Mr. Hollywood, don't want to cast
Chris for his talent and are too
frightened to hire a gay actor, then you
shouldn't have the privilege to work
with him.
The one thing that
he said that stayed with me from his
time on stage between the movie and his
performance is that he hopes that he and
Gay American Heroes remind everyone of
the basics of human rights. While hot
topics like gay marriage rage throughout
the nation, that we should not lose
focus on the senseless acts or people
being killed and who have done nothing
wrong, except be themselves.
Back to the whore
that is Chris Salvatore.
Start with a
talented and handsome man, put him
together with an organization that wants
to celebrate life instead of death,
screen a movie with him as one of the
deliciously adorable starring roles,
show off his vocal talents (singing ...
I can read your dirty minds), then mix
with one-too-many Parliament House
cocktails. What do you get? A whore!
Chris Salvatore
and his cohorts managed to turn me
upside down and shake every last quarter
out of my pockets. Some of those
dollar bills went to get in to the
screening, some for raffle tickets
(thanks for signing my DVD), some in the
bucket for each song that he sang (that
would be four if anyone's counting),
some to the impromptu collection to get
his shirt off and some to Wanzie to put
his face, well, somewhere.
I'm in love with -
errr - I love that Chris Salvatore is a
fund-raising, acting, singing,
not-stand-on-the-Trail activist type of
hustler and I sincerely wish that his
voice continues to crumble the
violations of basic human rights wall
and that his successes, while still
being himself, will bring him all
the peace, happiness and fortune that he
truly deserves.
For me, I have to
see if I can remember where I put that
cookie jar of quarters for a rainy day
to pay the rent this month.
O. K. So my New Year's resolution was
to be more positive in general. Well,
while I am trying, I am not doing that
well. It would help if people didn't
irritate the hell out of me. There I
will be, just all good natured and
sweet, and then someone will do
something that just makes me want to
push them down. And it is not just
people; often it is just little things
that get me going and turn me into a not
so positive person. So none of this is
really my fault. Here are some
things/people that will turn a perfectly
loving and lovely me into a negative,
irritable asshole:
People posting
pictures of their meal on Facebook. (I know
this seems like a small thing, but...)
People who talk during
the plays at the PH. IT IS NOT A DRAG SHOW
(and NO I am not saying you should talk
during a drag show, but...shut up. You know
the difference!)
"The Wolfman"...two
hours I will never get back.
Flip-flops at a bar.
(You can wear them if you want, but you
can't scream like a girl when someone steps
on your feet.)
People who don't shave
the back of their necks.
Yappy dogs.
Too many valet spaces
taking up almost an entire parking lot of a
local gay bar!!!
People who hate cats.
(What did cats ever do to you?)
People who think I can
only play women.
Magic fans (the
team). The owner is very vocal about being
against equal marriage, and actually donates
to defeat it. Why would you put a dime in
this man's pocket?
People who still write
checks at the grocery store. Come on,
REALLY?
Jennifer Aniston--why
does she still have a career?
Gwyneth Paltrow--hopefully
she is gone for good.
Six dollar weak ass
straight bar drinks. How do you straighties
afford to get drunk?
The huge Sarah Palin
billboard on I-4.
People constantly
pointing out Asians to me, or when I point
out a non-Asian who I think is attractive
they respond with, "but he's not Asian.""
Stupid Chick-fil-a
being closed on a Sunday.
Working 3 jobs
sometimes 60 hours a week, but still no
health insurance.
Jamaicans.
Bad weaves.
Short people.
People who don't tip.
How grey my beard
grows in.
Olives on a salad.
Republicans.
My cat having
alzheimers.
Every person who hangs
out in the lobby of my mom's retirement
apartments.
Winter mornings.
Tommy Wooten living so
far away.
Jay Leno.
Laundry.
Ear hair.
The prices at Whole
Foods.
My Windows 98.
Thinking about this
for another second.
Turning 50. UGH!

A Note From Wanzie:
|
I know not from Twitter, but in relation
to that technology, I just heard Diane
Sawyer say she is the "Precinct Captain"
(I think that's what she called herself)
for the "get Betty White on
Saturday Night Live" movement.

I am aware of the
public outcry to get SNL to invite Ms.
White to host (ever since her Snickers
commercial was aired on the Super Bowl),
and I join in that chorus. But who knew
from Twitter "Precinct Captains?"

And speaking of
captains, as everyone is likely aware by
now, the fearless leader of our own
Orlando International Fringe festival,
Beth Marshall, was in a car
accident resulting in a shattered knee.
Beth went in for surgery this week, and
she reports to the WANZeGRAM she will be
wheelchair bound for a minimum of 6
months. Yikes!
Keep Beth in your
thoughts, shoot her an email, give her a
call, send her healing energy, and if
you insist, I suppose you can pray for
her if you're of that persuasion.
What a gimp of a
household it must be over at the Chris
and Beth homestead; she's in a
wheelchair, and he has a broken wrist!
If you are familiar enough with the
family to know where they live, might be
a good idea to bring by some ready-made
meals or a sex surrogate.
Anyway, Beth wrote
to us this week because she wanted
WANZeGRAM subscribers to know that were
it not for her surgery, she would never
have dreamed of not being present for
our official outing to see Beth Marshall
Presents' Driving Miss Daisy
and the attendant bar outing afterwards,
tomorrow night. She's very proud of the
play and of the actors in it, and she
wanted to say "thank you" in advance to
everyone who will be attending tomorrow
evening's festivities. (Tickets are
still available.)
Despite her
personal plight, Beth remains engaged
with, and concerned about, the Fringe
Festival and most specifically, right
now, the upcoming Fab Fringe
Fundraiser. Me thinks that one
of the best ways we can collectively
support Beth is to support her efforts
by spreading the word about Fab Fringe,
and buying a ticket to attend.
The
always-entertaining variety show event
will take place in the Margeson
Theatre at Orlando Shakes on Monday,
March 8.
The show will feature the talents of
Becky Fisher, Jeff Wirth, VARIETease,
Orlando Youth Theatre, Wayburn Sassy &
Didi Panache, Janine Klein-Gay Bar Star,
Casting Shadows,
and more!
Beth is scheduled
to co-host with Pat Flick. I'm
sure she'll do everything within her
power to get there, if it is at all
possible to do so.
Food & Drink,
Mingling, & Silent Auction are at 6 PM.
Show time is 7 PM.
Tickets are $35 per person, or just $50
per couple, and can be obtained by
calling
407.648.0077.
Hope to see you
there.
