Dear WANZeGRAM Fan,
|
|
Hi there!
This is your one and only WANZeGRAM for
the week of Friday, April 9, 2010.
It's coming a day early so you won't
miss what's going on tonight and
tomorrow night.
This edition is short on photos and
style because we at the WANZeGRAM World
Headquarters have been scattered across
the south this week from Texas to Key
West and points in between.
But the Gram is not short on timely
content.
Please read it now and act accordingly.
Happy Thursday!

EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT SHOTGUN |
"...Shotgun was beyond anything I would
expect or have ever seen in Central
Florida. We left saying it was better
than anything we had seen Off
Broadway."
-
Frank A Santos, Chief
Financial Officer, The Rosen Center
"I was so happy to see SHOTOGUN
in production. Saw it last year as a
reading during Playfest and couldn't
wait to see it again."
- Survey Monkey Submission
"One of the best and very well done."
- Survey Monkey Submission
"SHOTOGUNwas
one of your all-time best! Excellent,
touching, I loved it!"
- Survey Monkey Submission
"The best play we've seen in the last 3
years"
- Survey Monkey Submission
"Best of all is the way Rus Blackwell
and Dennis Neal set up an uneasy
truce between the worn-down Beau and the
irascible Dex, two men who might have
been friends in some other world.
These are two of Orlando's finest actors,
and what they don't say is always more
interesting than what they do -
Blackwell in his numbed remoteness, Neal
in the fire that flickers across his
taciturn face. Human drama doesn't have
to look huge to be heartbreaking, these
men show you. When the flood comes, it's
all the more likely to sweep you
along."

to the Orlando Sentinel

We've Got Mail!
|
|
Dear Mr. Wanzie,
Time for you to turn in your Gay Card!
I am as straight as they come and I know
that Ms. Havoc's birth name was "Hovick"
not "Havick" (full birth name - "Ellen
Evangeline Hovick")
You also neglected to mention her most
important Broadway role, which was
starring in Cole Porter's "Mexican
Hayride" in 1944 (Winter Garden Theatre,
481 performances).
James Wolf
Dear Mr. Wolf
You are quite right concerning the
misspelling of Ms. What's her face's
name. I regret the error.
However, I quite purposely omitted
any reference to her appearance in
MEXICAN HEYRIDE just as I
did not list the titles of her many
B-movies.
No one has a hard on for Mr. Cole
Porter that could ever match the
intensity of yours.
MEXICAN HEYRIDE is not
exactly at the top of everyone's
mind when they recall their favorite
Broadway Shows.
I am aware that the well-known songs
"Abracadabra" and "My Heart Belongs
to Daddy" were featured in this
show, but the show title itself
would not resonate with most of my
far-younger-than-you readers.
Sincerely,
WANZIE
Michael,
I read with total agreement your article
about Miss June Havoc. I have often
thought, but as is always the case, that
without June, Gypsy would have never
been Gypsy. However, there was
one thing that I do disagree with,
well, not me ... but the books that I
have read. June DID have a problem with
the way her character was originally
written, and threatened to sue, if the
character's name remained June. There
were several re-writes of Gypsy (the
first performance was 4 hours long, with
the curtain falling after Rose's Turn
around 12:30) several songs were taken
out, Herbie's song "nice she ain't" and
June's song, "momma's talkin soft"
(which is referenced in Rose's turn..
"momma's talkin loud, momma's doin fine,
momma's movin on..") anyway... the point
is... for several weeks Baby June was
renamed Baby Claire, until June (as you
said) realized how important this
project was to Louise, when she finally
gave in and dropped the lawsuit. I
think she was also a wise enough woman
to know that by taking her name out of
the show, it would only hurt her own
career to not be associated with what
was sure to be another runaway hit
starring Ethel Merman.
I love your work;-)
MATTHEW
ARTER
Dearest
Matthew,
In fact you don't "disagree" with me
at all. I am completely aware of all
that you outlined above regarding
June and her initial concerns with
the musical Gypsy. But the fact
remains that ultimately, June did
not choose to impede the production
of the show, even though, as I wrote
- many believed she had the legal
right to do so and despite her
disdain for the life of the main
subject. I simply elected not to
write out the entire laborious
scenario leading up to that decision
as you have so aptly done in your
communiqué to me. I was, after all,
writing an Obituary - a tribute "if
you will", and not a complete
biography of the woman's life or a
thesis on her career.
But thank you. You do indeed bring
to light an interesting side note,
which I happy to include in the Gram
now that the poor woman's body is
cold.
Sincerely,
WANZIE
We at the
WANZeGRAM are always just as pleased as
punch to receive, post, and answer our
mail in this public forum. But it takes
two to play! Send your email to WANZIE!
