Dear WANZeGRAM Reader

Happy day-before-May day.

Not the actual holiday known as May Day, but rather the first day of May, which just happens to be tomorrow.

Yes, it's true the holiday known as May Day is also tomorrow, but that's not about which we at the WANZeGRAM are wishing you "happy."

We're just happy it's going to be the first day of May; not that it's going to be May Day.

May Day is too confusing to be celebrated.

May Day is related to the Celtic festival of Beltane, and the Germanic festival of Walpurgis Night, whatever the hell those things are.

May Day falls exactly half a year from November 1, another cross quarter day which is also associated with various northern European pagan and neo-pagan festivals, such as Samhain.

May Day marks the end of the uncomfortable winter half of the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations, regardless of the locally prevalent political or religious establishment.  (We like that part.)

And we don't see any harm in grabbing onto a festive streamer and prancing around a pole dressed like a fairy or garden sprite, as people seem prone to do on this occasion. (Although, to avoid arousing suspicions amongst your neighbors, we would caution you to do so behind a privacy fence, or at your neighborhood gay bar.)

Somehow or another, in other countries, May Day has become the equivalent of America's Labor Day, which we at the WANZeGRAM don't understand at all. And now for some reason May Day is catalyst enough to spark annual political demonstrations and mock revolutions...and even riots.

We at the WANZeGRAM are not advocating riots.

We're just happy to welcome May.

So, happy day-before-May day!

Enjoy your Gram.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO / Important Fringe Show Notice

Please be advised that John Sullivan, Michael Wanzie, Monique Byrnes, Kenny Howard, and Barry Miller are no longer associated with the Orlando Youth Alliance, and are NOT presenting the show - LET'S MAKE A BIG GAY DEAL -  which this group of concerned volunteers promoted at Fringe Preview.

An OYA fundraising show is still being presented at Fringe by others involved with OYA, under the new title - I ________ You. The schedule for this new show will be the same as is being advertised for LET'S MAKE A BIG GAY DEAL.

While we at the WANZeGRAM have no interest in dissuading you from attending the new show, we feel an obligation to make it perfectly clear that whatever form the show now takes, it will not include the people - such as that shirtless hunk of prize-presenting manhood, Chris Galen - who appeared in and presented the game show concept at Fringe preview.

By way of explanation, we regret to report that John Sullivan - the person with the longest history with Orlando Youth Alliance, and one of the most involved mentors and event organizers, who always put the best interest of the youth ahead of his own -  was "fired" from his volunteer position at OYA, out of the blue, via a registered letter from board President Michael Slaymaker, just 3 days after Fringe preview.

It was John Sullivan who first involved OYA in the Fringe Festival - not only raising significant funds for the organization, but also introducing the youth members themselves to the Festival, and theater in general. The two original Fringe shows which John produced for OYA over the past two years were not only well attended, well reviewed, and profitable, they also served to inform and educate the general public about OYA, and the plight of gay youth in today's society.

Due to the Board of Directors going in a direction with which John was not necessarily comfortable, John agreed to resign his OYA board position, and act as the Theater Liaison for the organization; a move the board supported.

Long-time OYA supporter Barry Miller, who has held OYA events in his home, made financial contributions to the organization, and provided free meeting space to the group at his Thornton Park office complex, approached John Sullivan with the idea for LET'S MAKE A BIG GAY DEAL.

The Wanzie Presents team, (which in addition to Miller included Wanzie, Kenny Howard, and Monique Byrnes) in association with John Sullivan as the appointed representative/liaison to OYA, went to work developing the show.

Somewhere along the line, people on the board of OYA became concerned that this group of seasoned Fringe veterans might not be on the ball. Now remember, the group consisted of John Sullivan - who produced two previous shows at Fringe on behalf of OYA, Monique Byrnes - a respected actress and singer with proven fundraising and managerial skills who is also a past Fringe board member, Barry Miller - who was a transformative President of the Board of Directors of Orlando Fringe, Kenny Howard - who has a long string of Fringe hits to his credit, several of which have won awards, and Wanzie  - who has been doing Fringe since year 2, and has written and produced the most financially successful and most attended show in Fringe history (The Lion Queen), also directed by Howard. Suddenly, out of nowhere, two individual board members sent emails to Wanzie, Miller, and Howard, lamenting the fact that they had not seen a script, or a rehearsal schedule, or a poster design.

The production group hadn't realized they needed to interface with the board at all. The group informed the board they would prefer the board handle inquiries through John Sullivan, as the group did not wish to be answerable to multiple contacts when there was a board appointed liaison in place with whom the group was working quite effectively, and with whom the group was well pleased. The group further assured the board they knew how to put up a good show in a timely manner without board oversight beyond that of the board appointed liaison - John Sullivan. The group expressed their disinterest in becoming mired down in organizational bureaucracy, or inner workings issues of the organization.

Sullivan then sent the board a very frank email expressing his dismay that the board would contact the creative team directly rather than going through him.

The board then sent John Sullivan a somewhat ridiculous certified letter informing him that he should immediately cease representing OYA, and that he was "fired."  They did so without warning the creative team that they were going to fire their OYA liaison and co-producer.

Standing in solidarity with John Sullivan, the creative team of Wanzie, Miller, Howard, and Byrnes pulled out of the project without hesitation.

Not only did the group not wish to present the show - on which Sullivan had already worked so hard - without him, the group had also become increasingly concerned over recent actions/or inaction on the part of the OYA Board with regards to the all important task of securing a building for safe-haven meeting space for the youth. This is a goal that had been established and well publicized by the board two years ago. Since announcing that goal, Wanzie, and specifically Susan Unger of The Parliament House in particular, began fundraising to that end - and through various events held at the PH, have raised nearly ten thousand dollars specifically earmarked for the OYA building fund. It has since come to the attention of the aforementioned group, that the board had since decided against securing its own building any time in the near future.

Thus, not only are John Sullivan, Michael Wanzie, Monique Byrnes, Kenny Howard, and Barry Miller not presenting the show they prepared for the Festival, they remain eager to learn exactly what are the intentions of the OYA board with regards to the money already raised for the building fund, and all believe there needs to be an immediate change of board members at OYA.

The group maintains it was reckless, unnecessary, and just plain rude to have fired John Sullivan from an organization he himself helped establish, and to do so just weeks before the fundraising show was to open, and indeed, just weeks before Sullivan's already planned resignation from his post. The group remains convinced that Sullivan's firing was borne out of vindictiveness with no regard to what was in the best interest of the youth supposedly being served. The group collectively feels insulted by the misplaced concerns by, and sophomoric actions of, the board. The group feels very strongly that a new OYA board needs to be established, and that John Sullivan should be on that board.

TONIGHT - Sing-A-Long SOUND OF MUSIC at CityWalk Cineplex

The Orlando chapter of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will host a Sound of Music Sing-a-Long at the AMC Multiplex Cinema, located at Universal Citywalk, on Friday, April 30th, and Saturday, May 1.

If you've never before attended an interactive Sound of Music screening, we at the WANZeGRAM are here to tell you it's a hoot. The lyrics to every song roll across the screen in subtitle fashion, and the entire audience sings along to each and every Rogers and Hamerstein song in the film. Basically, this is Rich Charron's idea of hell; Kenny Howard's heaven on earth.

During the non-musical portions of the film, audience members are allowed (at some screenings, even encouraged) to talk during the film. Not to one another, or in conversation, but rather to share aloud your color commentary, should you choose to provide one from time to time. In other words, if you have a snarky remark to make about something "happening" on the screen, you are not meant to keep it to yourself. Shout it out, Louise! This often becomes a one-up-manship contest of wits that can prove quite entertaining. To further the Rocky Horror Picture Show-esque feel of the proceedings, the Orlando Sisters will be handing out Audience Participation Kits (included in the $12 admission price), and attendees will be prompted as to the when and the how of it all.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up in costumes, such as nuns, Von Trap Family Singers, or "brown paper packages," and other creative things from the movie. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

100 percent of the profits from this screening will benefit the good works of the recently sanctified Orlando Chapter of this most benevolent Order of cross-dressing nuns.

THEATER - Lend Me A Tenor
Theatre Downtown production of the Tony Award-winning Ken Ludwig comedy under the direction of Frank Hilgenberg. Set in 1934, this farce revolves around renowned tenor Tito Merelli, who is scheduled to sing the lead in Otello at a gala fundraiser. Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel. Chaos ensues when Merelli's wife, who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover, leaves him a "Dear John" letter. The distraught Merelli, accidentally over-medicated on tranquilizers, passes out. The company's General Manager is determined the show must go on (for his own financial sake), and asks his assistant Max to impersonate the opera star. Max puts on the blackface makeup required for the role of Otello, and his disguise succeeds admirably--until Merelli, also in blackface, wakes up and heads for the stage. What follows is a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, plot twists, double entendres, innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors. The cast includes Mike Kendrick, Victora Burns, Sarah Benz-Phillips, Jackie Prutsman, Larry Stallings, Adam DelMedico, Will Barbara, and Cira Larken.

A Note From Wanzie:

Rick (man magnet) Claggett  - Watermark business manager, activist, friend, major homo, and WANZeGRAM subscriber - along with his longtime friend and roommate - Jen (always there when you need her) Kunsch - suddenly find themselves homeless. Seems the house near Downtown Orlando they were renting together was completely destroyed during Monday night's thunderstorm. A large tree fell on the home, literally slicing it in two. Rick and Jen did not have renter's insurance, and just about all of their possessions were ruined. What items didn't get damaged by falling debris were subsequently ruined by the continuing deluge of water that rained in everywhere.

Jen was able to quickly save a few small electronics before being officially banished from the property, but other than that she and Rick pretty much lost everything. The house was condemned, so they are each now couch surfing at separate places with friends for the time being. It is their intention to continue living together in a new place, but obviously they are going to need a little assistance to get to the point where they can even consider setting up a new household completely from scratch.

So I hope those of you who know these fine folks personally will join me at SIP this afternoon, and give what you can.

If you can't make it to SIP today but would like to help out, Rich Charron has created a page on our website where you may donate using your credit card, debit card, e-check, or paypal transfer.

Even if you don't know these kids, consider lending a hand for Kharma's sake. This was simply a random act of nature with a devastating result, the victims of which could have just as easily been any one of us. So whether you are a subscriber here in Orlando, or one of our many subscribers up north in the tri-state area, or in L.A, if you are able to spare even just $10, please log on to www.wanzie.com, and do so now. If you have a roof over your head tonight, please make a donation.

We will report the results of this on line fundraising drive in next week's gram, and we will put your name on a card to Rick and Jen when we present them with a check to help them re-establish their home.

Thank you for your consideration.

By the way, SIP is located in Orlando at 724 Virginia Drive, in between Mills Avenue and Orange Avenue. It is in a little neighborhood curbside strip center on the south side of the street.
