Dear Wanzegram Reader, |
|
Good
Morning,
This week's A NOTE FROM WANZIE at
the end of this Gram is a stream of
consciousness mélange that is so all
over the place I didn't really feel the
need to write an extensive Greeting.
So let's just breathe a deep healing
breath or two, and let them out slowly.
Relax.
Now get ready to enjoy your weekend,
secure in the knowledge that I, Michael
Wanzie, have fully recovered from Gay
Days,

and am back at the helm of this - your
very own WANZeGRAM.
Enjoy!

WANZIE
Offers First In Series of Ballroom Dance
Mini-Courses
|
|
Back in the late 70's and early 80's
Wanzie worked as a multi-award-winning
Ballroom Dance Instructor and
Competition Choreographer for Arthur
Murray Dance Studios. Over a period of
17-years thereafter, Wanzie taught over
1,200 Disney Cast Members how to dance
Ballroom styles socially, through the
Disney University/Cast Activities
programs. He also taught Ballroom dance
for the adult continuing education
program at UCF, and choreographed
Ballroom dance sequences for shows such
as MY FAIR LADY and MAME at the Civic
Theaters of Central Florida, as well as
in KISS ME KATE for the Gold Coast Opera
Company. While his passions turned from
dance to theater, over the years Wanzie
has taught the occasional group classes
at various dance studios around Central
Florida, and spent one summer teaching
Ballroom at the famed DANCE COMPANY in
Stratford, Connecticut.
In an effort to get moving again after
spending most of his time sitting at a
computer as of late, and at the behest
of many friends and colleagues, Wanzie
is once again offering his mini crash
courses in Ballroom Dance.
The first course offered will meet for
one hour sessions on 6 consecutive
Thursday evenings: July 15, 22, & 29 and
August 5, 12 & 19, 2010.
Crash Course #1 will focus on dance
variations which all include and are
built around the box step. The three
dances students will absolutely learn to
dance in a social (not competition)
setting within the 6 week-long course
are
● Rumba
● Fox Trot
● Waltz
This provides a great beginners
foundation for other dances, and the
dances listed are taught in what is
known as "Night Club Style," meaning
steps and techniques the participants
learn will be danceable on smallish and
sometimes crowed dance floors, at
weddings, on cruise ships, and at
corporate functions.
Students need not have a partner
to attend the class
Switching partners is required
of those who sign up as couples.
(This is essential in learning proper
lead and follow technique)
Same-gender couples are most
welcome to attend
Class venue is yet to be determined, but
will definitely be in the Downtown
Orlando or Loch Haven area of town.
(Several locations are currently under
consideration, awaiting certain
particulars, one of the variables being
the number of persons who register.)
Obviously the number of persons who may
participate will be limited, so we
encourage you to please register NOW if
interested.
The starting time for the one-hour
sessions will be 7:30 PM.
The fee is only $49 per single student
for the entire 6-week course, or just
$90 per couple.
A second course to be offered later in
the year will include instruction in -
● CHA -CHA
● SWING
● MAMBO
● DISCO HUSTLE
An advanced class, which may ONLY be
attended by students who took part in
both the first and second courses listed
above, will include instruction in
● SAMBA
● TANGO

From
Our Secret New York Correspondent: |
|
 Can
you identify this disarmingly handsome,
thoroughly accomplished A-list Maestro?
Our secret correspondent never names
names, but The New York Pops
may prove to be the reason Mr. Right is
holding the baton.
Now can you guess which one of our many
WANZeGRAM subscribers who is currently
in NYC is purported to always be the
last to leave the adorable conductor's
late night in-home sing-a-long piano
parties?
Might there be an organ involved?
We at the WANZeGRAM do not pretend to
know the answers to such questions.
Certain sources may prove unreliable,
but rather than go through the hassle of
verifying facts and vetting informants,
we instead opt to go with guarded
implications and innuendo. We simply
pose questions for your consideration
and entertainment, and to add just a
touch of salaciousness sizzle to what
could too easily become just another
humid and abhorrently mundane summer.
Suffice it to say, "Maestro, if you
please" can take on a whole new meaning
outside the concert hall.

A True
Orlando Treasure - JACKIE JONES - From
Whence She Came |
|
"Orlando's First Lady of Jazz," known
for her voice, wit, and showmanship,
will take to the Footlight Theatre stage
with her band on Saturday evening, June
19, 2010, at 8 PM at The Parliament
House Resort.
Jacqueline has performed across the
country and abroad, and she remains a
wildly popular favorite in her adopted
hometown of Orlando. Her spirited blend
of jazz, rhythm and blues, and
contemporary music consistently delights
her audiences whether she is performing
in an intimate club or on the concert
stage.
By the age of 19,
Jackie already had 15 years to her
credit as a professional gospel singer.
Without missing a beat, the Gary,
Indiana native pursued her singing
career in Chicago nightclubs after
earning a degree in nursing from Purdue
University.
Although best known as a singer, she is
no stranger to the dramatic stage,
having appeared in productions of The
King and I, South Pacific, For Color'd
Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When
the Rainbow is Enuf, Ain't Misbehavin',
The Tragic Life and Death of Dr.
Faustus, Godspell, Tintypes, and
Tommy and A Little Moonlight ...
Jacqueline Jones Celebrates Billie
Holiday, a theatrical piece created
especially for her.
Our own hometown Orlando Jazz Diva,
Jacqueline Jones, was appointed Official
United States Cultural Ambassador to the
USSR nearing the end of the cold war.
Miss Jones was one of the very first
American entertainers to be permitted to
perform in Soviet Russia.
The irrepressible "Jackie" suffered an
aneurism just a few years ago. She
endured emergency brain surgery, a
prolonged rehabilitation, and against
all odds, returned to the stage just as
vivacious and vocally gifted as ever.
For a time, the post-operation Jackie
wore wigs on and off the stage. She has
now basically said to hell with it " I
am who I am." We at WANZIE PRESENTS are
pleased to report that the poster for
her engagement at the Parliament house
utilizes the first-ever published new
head shot of Jackie with her adorable
peach fuzz 'do with which nature and the
brain surgery left her. Jackie has
proclaimed, "No more wigs!"
The vivacious, raspy-voiced MISS JONES
has put together a song list
specifically for her "One Night Only"
appearance at the Parliament House
Resort.
In this show Miss Jones mixes all sorts
of style elements, and makes them work!
There's a little vamp, a touch of class,
a bit of trash, and a lot of love in
this Wanzie Presents concert which Miss
Jones herself has dubbed, "HELLO,
DARLINGS!"

THEATER - 9 Parts of Desire
Empty Spaces Theatre Co, recently named
"Best Cutting-Edge Productions" by Orlando
Home and Leisure Magazine, brings Raffo's
heart-rending and
provocative work to the stage. This work
delves into the many conflicting aspects of
what it means to be a woman in the age-old
war zone that is Iraq...an unusually timely
meditation on the ancient, the modern, and
the feminine in a country overshadowed by
war. This powerful work reaches across
religious and political borders, and across
genders and age to reach the hearts of all
who have experienced love and life, loss and
tragedy, and shows us a world so far from
our own, yet so close and vital to our
lives. The work - originally envisioned as a
one woman solo show - can be performed with
up to 9 women. Empty Spaces fills these
amazing roles with some of Central Florida's
best, with an ensemble featuring (in
alphabetical order): Stasha Boyd,
Heather Godwin, Leesa Halstead, Olivia
Horn, Emily Killian, Mikki Scanlon Kriekard,
Marcie Schwalm, Leander Suleiman, and
Sarah Villegas. The work will be
directed by John DiDonna.

A Note From Wanzie:
|
81-year old Jimmy Dean
is dead! Meanwhile, Angela
Lansbury, at 84 years of
age, is singing her heart out, eight
shows a week, in A LITTLE
NIGHT MUSIC on Broadway.
I'm sure there's a lesson to be
learned there, although I don't know
exactly what it is, but I can only
hazard to guess that Ms. Lansbury
doesn't eat Jimmy Dean sausage on a
regular basis.
I have recently discovered the
Morning Star
brand of pretend breakfast sausage
made from soy, and I gotta say - it
ain't half bad, and it's about three
times better (or should I say three
times less harmful) for you than the
real stuff.
By way of explanation for
our Twink subscribers: Singer/songwriter
Jimmy Dean enjoyed a successful
country western recording career in
the 1960's before becoming a sausage
baron; and Angela Landsbury was a
Grand Dame of the Broadway stage who
also appeared in many hit films long
before her 11-season stint on TV's
MURDER SHE WROTE.
And speaking of Murder...Nancy Grace
Anyone?
BTW - The original staging of A
LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was the very
first Broadway show I ever attended.
It was back in 1973. I was
privileged to see the one and only
Hermione Gingold
(God, she was wonderful in the move
GIGI !) in the role
currently being played by Ms.
Lansbury, and the lovely
Glynis Johns in the role
currently being played by
Catherine Zeta Jones.
Hermione Gingold as she appeared
singing "Liaisons" in the 1973
Broadway debut of A LITTLE NIGHT
MUSIC.
 |
Glynis Johns as she appeared singing
"Send In The Clowns" in the 1973
Broadway Debut of A LITTLE NIGHT
MUSIC.
 |
If per-chance you might wish to see
the Misses Landsbury and Zeta Jones
in the current revival of A LITTLE
NIGHT MUSIC on Broadway, you don't
have much time. The show, with its
current cast, will give its final
performance on Sunday of this very
weekend!
4-Time Tony Award Winner Angela
Landsbury (seated) and recent Tony
Award Winner (Outstanding
Performance by an Actress in a
Musical - for this very musical -
won just this Sunday past) Catherine
Zeta Jones (with the girl in her
lap) have but 3 performances
remaining in the Broadway revival of
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
 |
After a brief hiatus, A LITTLE NIGHT
MUSIC will resume performances on
July 18th with two different stars
in the leading roles; the fabulous
Bernadette Peters will replace
Catherine Zeta Jones in the role of
Desiree Armfeldt, and the
unrelenting Elaine Stritch will
replace Angela Landsbury in the role
of the senior Madame Armfeldt.
Bernadette Peters
 |
Elaine Stritch
 |
TWINK NOTES: Glynis
Johns played the mother - Mrs. Banks
- in the 1964 Disney film version of
MARY POPPINS,
which, I will assume, you have seen
on DVD. Hermione Gingold you won't
remember from anything unless you're
an old movie musical buff, in which
case you will have seen her on TCM
in GIGI, at
minimum. Bernadette Peters
co-starred with Steve Martin
in the cult classic film THE
JERK. Elaine Stritch was at
one time Broadway's most infamous
real life drunk, who doesn't drink
anymore, but who still sings as
though she's got a beer bottle cap
lodged in her throat. Stritch was in
the original Broadway cast of
Sondheim's COMPANY
where she made famous the song, "Here's
To The Ladies Who Lunch."
I also assume that at this point
you will have taken notice that the
popular "Send In The Clowns"
originated on Broadway and not as a
Disco song, although the dance remix
was one of the most requested in gay
clubs back in the day.
When Hollywood re-imagined A LITTLE
NIGHT MUSIC for the big screen
,Hermione Gingold reprised her role
as Madame Armfeldt, but Glynis Johns
was passed over in favor of the
beautiful Elizabeth Taylor
who played Desiree in the 1977 film
version of the musical.
Elizabeth Taylor as she appeared in
the role of Desieree Armfeldt in the
1977 film version of A LITTLE NIGHT
MUSIC. The movie also starred Len
Cariou, Diana Rigg, and Hermione
Gingold
 |
Hermione Gingold was 89 years old
when she died in 1989.
Elizabeth Taylor is still alive,
although she has been married once
for every decade she has lived;
eight times to seven different men.
(She married Richard Burton twice.)
Taylor's old pal Mickey Rooney has
also been married eight times.
The grand prize goes to Zsa Zsa
Gabor, who is currently on husband
number 9.
(God forbid we gays might impugn the
sanctity of the sacred bonds of
marriage between a man and a woman!)
Did you know that when Liz married
Larry Fortensky in 1996 her buddy
Michael Jackson gave the couple two
Lake Eola swan boats as a wedding
gift? True. that!
Taylor was also married to Eddie
Fisher (1959), having stolen him
away from his wife Debbie Reynolds
with whom he sired Carrie (Princess
Leia) Fisher. Liz divorced Eddie on
my birthday - March 6 - in 1964.
That was the same year I first
visited the New York World's Fair.

The double observation towers of the
New York State Pavilion at the
1964/65 Worlds Fair later figured
prominently into the MEN IN BLACK
movie, and have since been
replicated at Universal Studios
Florida, as part of the facade of
the attraction based on that film.
The fake towers are clearly visible
from my back yard here in Orlando.
Here are a few of the attractions I
was privileged to visit on my two
trips to the Fair:
AVIS
(car rentals) ANTIQUE CAR AUTOPIA
The
4-lane SWISS SKY RIDE
Disney's MAGIC HIGHWAY IN THE SKY -
The FORD Pavilion - Free Admission
The US
Royal Tires giant Ferris wheel -
Admission Free
SINCLAIR (gas stations) walk-through
DINO LAND Attraction - Admission
Free

Disney's CAROUSEL OF PROGRESS at
the General Electric pavilion -
PROGRESSLAND - Admission Free
The Pepsi-Cola Pavilion to benefit
UNICEF. A separate 70-cent ticket
was required. (This was a big deal
since it was only $2.00 for adult
general admission into the Fair
itself in which most attractions
were free. One of the only few other
attractions that required admission
was, of course, the Vatican
Pavilion; the Catholic Church never
missing an opportunity to collect
money.)
Disney's IT'S A SMALL WORLD
Unbelievably, the Pepsi-Cola Company
waited until exactly one year before
the fair opened to commit to an
attraction. Walt Disney stunned his
Imagineers by accepting the
challenge to imagine, design,
engineer, and costume the figures in
an attraction that would somehow
reflect the children served by
UNICEF, and then ship the yet-to-be
conceived attraction piece by piece
from California for re-assembly in
New York, all in the space of just
slightly less than 12 months.
The Imagineers were already racing
against the clock to complete the
three attractions they had committed
to create for Ford Motor Company,
General Electric, and the State of
Illinois (Great Moments with Mr.
Lincoln). The theme of the
Pepsi-Cola attraction was unknown.
Within a year, the Disney team
conceived the attraction and
literally invented a
never-before-utilized ride system
(multi-passenger canal boats
propelled by water jets within guide
rails), and the Sherman Brothers
wrote and then recorded the theme
song in 23 different languages
utilizing children from around the
globe.
While the work was proceeding in
California, the building that would
house the attraction needed to be
constructed on the fair site. There
was no time to design and build an
architecturally significant pavilion
within the time allotted by the
presenters of the Fair. So Walt had
his Imagineers design a multi-story
mobile called The Tower of the Four
Winds to stand directly in front of,
and distract from, the non-descript,
uninspired cube that was the
Pepsi-Cola Pavilion, which was
completed just in time to receive
the attraction and ride system which
did not became fully operational
until hours before its opening.
Despite its hefty admission price,
It's A Small World was one of the
most visited attractions at the
Fair, with guests often waiting as
long as three hours to board "The
Happiest Voyage to Ever Sail."
Jimmy Dean did not have an
attraction at the New York World's
Fair.
