Dear Wanzegram Reader,

Happy Summer!

It's officially here ya know?

It arrived on June 21st in case you weren't aware.

Of course, if you live in Central Florida you'd be hard pressed to believe it hadn't arrived at least 8 weeks ago.

We had the longest and coldest spat of Winter weather in the history or our state, followed by a scant four days of Spring weather, followed immediately by staggering heat that began in late April. (But there's no such thing as global warming).

But, when inclined to complain, just think of the poor folks in Tennessee, Kentucky, and California and of course those who live along the "Oil Coast."

We'll end this "Greeting" with a phrase usually reserved for use right after the newspapers show 8-foot snow drifts and freezing temperatures up north - but despite the fact that we are experiencing temps in the high 90's with a humidity factor that makes it feel like over 100 degrees - we're going to use the phrase anyway, because after all, we in the Greater Orlando area have not had to endure floods, or wild fires, or petroleum muck invading our very lives and lifestyle -

"Aren't You Glad You Live In Florida?"

(To those subscribers who do not live in Florida - get over it!)

Enjoy!

You Can Live in a Disney Home Fit for a Princess

If you've got a minimum of a million and a half bucks to spare you can soon live in your own home, year round, right smack in the middle of "The Vacation Kingdom of the World".

Walt Disney World will soon be offering for sale, single family homes priced between $1.5 million and $8 million dollars, situated in its soon to be constructed Golden Oak residential resort community located adjacent to The Four Seasons Resort Orlando, situated right in the heart of the world's largest privately owned resort and entertainment destination.

Entrance to The Four Seasons Orlando Hotel and what will soon become Disney World's on-site residential gated community.
Golden Oak Resort

Disney "Imagineers" - the same folks who designed things like Pirates of the Caribbean, Expedition Everest, and all the international areas at Epcot's World Showcase - will design the gated community which will include a private clubhouse and use of most Four Seasons Resort amenities such as the spa, and golf course.

Disney anticipates the first homes (fewer than 30) will be available to be moved into in 2011, with as many as 400 more residences planned to be built upon the 980 acre site over the next ten years; almost half that acreage will consist of "designated conservation areas" a Disney spokesperson reported.

A recent Disney press release spins it this way, "We have a range of options for guests at all price points to enjoy the Walt Disney World Resort. But Golden Oak is something totally new: a residential resort community, right in the heart of the magic."

The first step for prospective homebuyers is to submit your name along with a 25-thousand dollar good faith deposit in order to snag a spot on the home buyer's reservation list. Disney started accepting deposits on Wednesday of this week.

So if you've always wanted to live inside the Walt Disney World Resort, break open your piggy bank and start counting out the millions; now is your chance!
Help Propel Fringe to Year 20 - Maybe Win a Superpass!

As a result of how drastically the State of Florida has cut grant funding for the new fiscal year, The Orlando Fringe Festival's first round of grant funding has been reduced by nearly $23,000!

This could prove ruinous to this, the longest running Fringe in the USA and emergency support is needed now more than ever.  So the good folks over at your local Fringe office are launching the all new $20 for Fringe 20 fundraiser!- The results of which will hopefully help move the venerable arts organization into into its 20th Anniversary Festival in 2011.

Every time you donate $20 between July 1 and December 31, 2010, you will be entered into a drawing for a 2011 Fringe SUPER PASS to be drawn on January 1, 2011!

If you have a PayPal account, you may make your donation online by visiting
www.orlandofringe.org

You may also call 407-648-0077 ext. 2 and pay via credit card.

Or you may mail your tax deductible donation to:

Orlando Fringe
398 West Amelia Street
Orlando, FL 32801
Attention: 20 for 20

And remember, for every $20 donated, you receive one entry into the SUPER PASS drawing on January 1, 2011.  Thus $100 means you will automatically have your name entered 5 times.

If you would like to enter a friend, please call the Fringe office at 407.648.0077 to arrange payment and they will send a gift card in your friend's name, letting them know you have entered them into the drawing as gift to both the Fringe and your friend or family member.

Participate now, and remember to consider this unique option when going through your Christmas gift giving list.

$20 for Fringe 20 makes a great gift for the arts supporter in your life and/or the once a year avid Fringe attendee.

Fringe needs your 20 bucks to see the festival through to its 20th year!  We and they thank you in advance for you consideration and generosity.
WANZIE's Ballroom Dance Classes to be Held at D-Squared

We are pleased to announce that the production facilities of D-Squared is the location selected to host Wanzie's upcoming ballroom dance classes.

D-Squared is located right smack dab on the corner of Alden Road and Virginia Drive, just a ˝ block off Orange Avenue directly behind Bryon's Restaurant opposite Lake Ivanhoe.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's Wanzie worked as a multi-award-winning Ballroom Dance Instructor and Competition Choreographer for Arthur Murray Dance Studios. Over a period of 17-years thereafter, Wanzie taught over 1,200 Disney Cast Members how to dance Ballroom styles socially, through the Disney University/Cast Activities programs. He also taught Ballroom dance for the adult continuing education program at UCF, and choreographed Ballroom dance sequences for shows such as MY FAIR LADY and MAME at the Civic Theaters of Central Florida, as well as in KISS ME KATE for the Gold Coast Opera Company. While his passions turned from dance to theater, over the years Wanzie has taught the occasional group classes at various dance studios around Central Florida, and spent one summer teaching Ballroom at the famed DANCE COMPANY in Stratford, Connecticut.

In an effort to get moving again after spending most of his time sitting at a computer as of late, and at the behest of many friends and colleagues, Wanzie is once again offering his mini crash courses in Ballroom Dance.

The first course offered will meet for one hour sessions on 6 consecutive Thursday evenings: July 15, 22, & 29 and August 5, 12 & 19, 2010.

Crash Course #1 will focus on dance variations which all include and are built around the box step. The three dances students will absolutely learn to dance in a social (not competition) setting within the 6 week-long course are:

  • Rumba
  • Fox Trot
  • Waltz

This provides a great beginners foundation for other dances, and the dances listed are taught in what is known as "Night Club Style," meaning steps and techniques the participants learn will be danceable on smallish and sometimes crowed dance floors, at weddings, on cruise ships, and at corporate functions.

Students need not have a partner to attend the class

Switching partners is required of those who sign up as couples. (This is essential in learning proper lead and follow technique)

Same-gender couples are most welcome to attend

Obviously the number of persons who may participate will be limited, so we encourage you to please register NOW if interested.

The starting time for the one-hour sessions will be 7:30 PM.

The fee is only $49 per single student for the entire 6-week course, or just
$90 per couple.

A second course to be offered later in the year will include instruction in -

  • CHA-CHA
  • SWING
  • MAMBO
  • DISCO HUSTLE

An advanced class, which may ONLY be attended by students who took part in both the first and second courses listed above, will include instruction in

  • SAMBA
  • TANGO

Wanzie,

I loved your Note From Wanzie last week. I always enjoy reading whatever you have to rant about, even when I don't agree, which is often. But me and my boyfriend both really like it when you ramble from one topic to another and cover a lot of unrelated things. We loved learning the history of A Little Night Music and are still scratching our heads over how that subject ended up in a retrospective of the New York Worlds Fair and how Michael Jackson once gave Liz Taylor Lake Eola swan boats? It's crazy how you do that, and we just wanted to say those are the kinds of notes we like best, rather than the ones where you bash the Vatican.

Your Fan,
Jeff Wheeler

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to write in. I appreciate that you appreciate my rambling Notes rather than my ranting Notes.

Note taken.

However I still view the Catholic Church with utter distain and Vatican bashing will likely still occur in this e-publication, but in light of your letter I shall attempt to limit such Catholic-related rants to one per quarter.

I remain yours in the Christ who died for all of mankind's sins accept those of the homos who are going straight to hell.

THEATRE - Spring Awakening: A Children's Tragedy
Carbon Productions, LLC presentation of the Frank Wedekind play which was the source material for the hit Broadway musical of the same name. Written in 1891 the play was immediately banned due its frank depiction of sexuality.

The story revolves around a group of teens in Germany who explore and, ultimately, must come to terms with their own growing desires. At times tragic and humorous, challenging and familiar, the play is often censored and rarely produced.

Featuring a new translation by award-winning novelist Jonathan Franzen, Spring Awakening is as relevant and provocative today as it was a hundred years ago.

The show will feature a slew of talented youngsters with the adult roles being filled by such notable actors as Robyn Pedretti-Kelly, John Palmer, Landon Price, Lori McCaskill and Kevin Bee.

THEATER - 9 Parts of Desire

Empty Spaces Theatre Co, recently named "Best Cutting-Edge Productions" by Orlando Home and Leisure Magazine, brings Raffo's heart-rending and provocative work to the stage. This work delves into the many conflicting aspects of what it means to be a woman in the age-old war zone that is Iraq...an unusually timely meditation on the ancient, the modern, and the feminine in a country overshadowed by war. This powerful work reaches across religious and political borders, and across genders and age to reach the hearts of all who have experienced love and life, loss and tragedy, and shows us a world so far from our own, yet so close and vital to our lives. The work - originally envisioned as a one woman solo show - can be performed with up to 9 women.  Empty Spaces fills these amazing roles with some of Central Florida's best, with an ensemble featuring (in alphabetical order): Stasha Boyd, Heather Godwin, Leesa Halstead, Olivia Horn, Emily Killian, Mikki Scanlon Kriekard, Marcie Schwalm, Leander Suleiman, and Sarah Villegas. The work will be directed by John DiDonna.

A Note From Wanzie:

My computer is once again in Texas being rebuilt by Apple, so my time on borrowed computers has been very limited this week and getting the gram together has been a major task sans my laptop.

So the Note is short and sweet this week. No Vatican Bashing (see We've Got Mail section above).

I'd like to thank Jeff Kern who is at the editing and formatting helm flying solo this week while Gary and Val are on yet another vacation in Key West.

BTW - Happy Anniversary to Gary and Val!

Below is a snap of WANZeGRAM subscriber and Orlando actor Frank McClain as he is currently appearing (with gun in hand) in the world premiere production of WHODUNIT...The Musical at Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse in Rock Island, Indiana.

Murduerous Frank McLain
Frank reports that he is working for great employers and with very nice cast members and is thus having a very positive experience. Frank has two full days off each week during which he makes the easy drive to Dubuque where he spends time with his mother and gets to visit with his sweet dog Daisy who accompanied Frank on the drive north in mid May and is staying at the home of a relative.

Rebecca Fisher is also out of town these days, performing in MENOPAUSE The Musical at the Oslo State Theatre in Sarasota.

Meanwhile, back in my birth state of Connecticut, a little known gay bar that is hugely significant in gay history is about bid this world adieu.

The Cedar Brook Café in Westport is, indisputably, the oldest gay bar operating in the United States. Unbelievably, The Cedar Brook opened as a known gay establishment fully 71 years ago!

Sadly the Cedar Brook Café will serve its last drink tomorrow night.

Clem Bellairs, who has owned the club for the past 12 years, said his reasons for closing the Cedar Brook were financial, "The landlord died and the people who bought it doubled my rent," he said. "I can't afford it anymore."

Dan Woog, author of  School's Out: The Impact of Gay and Lesbian Issues on America's Schools said the Cedar Brook has played an important role within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community for many years. "In the early days, when bars were the only place gay people could congregate, it was a refuge," he said. "In the 1970s when gay people came out more publicly, it was the center of Fairfield County gay life. In the 1980s, when more women started going, it helped bring the gay and lesbian communities closer together. Always, it was a rite of passage for young people -- for many, their first introduction to the gay community."

For an astonishing 71 years The Cedar Brook Café has been to Fairfield County, Connecticut what the Parliament House has been to Central Florida for the past 35.

For those subscribers who live in Connecticut and New York - you might consider visiting this historical landmark before last call tomorrow night.

A closing party featuring local musicians will take place on June 26.  Admission will be free:

Cedar Brook Café
919 Post Road East
Westport, CT 06880-5221

The Cedar Brook Cafe is being razed to make way for a much needed strip mall.
