From those wacky dames of Twisted Sisters’
Comedy Hour, Miss Sammy, Carol Lee, and Gidget Galore (and from the pen and warped mind
of playwright Matthew Arter) comes an all new Florida-based parody of
the most highly attended show on Broadway.
SCHMICK-ED: A Totally Wicked Parody opens a 3-show-only
run at Footlight Theater beginning on Saturday evening November 8, 2008.
Arter’s SCHMICK-ED is the story of two friends, Elpheba (Miss
Sammy) Greenblat and Galinda (Carol Lee) Goldman, who are roommates in
an up-scale retirement community in Boca Raton. They kvetch, they sing,
they shop, and they each fall in love with the same plastic surgeon.
Trouble ensues. They get verklempt. In the end, they discover
they are
better friends than they realized. It's all enough to make you
put
down the cream cheese and hug someone. Gidget Galore rounds out the
cast of three as wheel chair-bound narrator, Tessie Rose.
Even if you’ve never seen Wicked, the story of Schmick-ed
stands on it’s own as a wholly enjoyable and fully understandable (and
funny as all get out) show. If indeed you are familiar with the songs
from Wicked (and/or are Jewish or know someone who is Jewish)
the show for you will be like buttah.
With only three show-dates on offer these tickets will go fast. Select-a-Seat
today!

FINAL PERFORMANCE:
| MARE TO BE REMEMBERED THIS
SATURDAY! |
For those of you
who wish to commemorate the life of Marilyn (Mare the Maid)
Gordon-Corwin, we are pleased to announce a
life celebration party will be held in her honor, this Saturday, at one
of her favorite spots; the outdoor veranda of the Tap Room at Dubsdread
City Golf Course.
This will be a very informal gathering of family and friends who will
come together to share memories and photographs and throw back a drink
or two in remembrance of Mare. Dress is casual. No suits allowed.

A private area has been secured on the Veranda. The group will have a
dedicated outdoor bar and server, and light snacks will be provided as
part of the minimum required catering buy. Bar tabs and lunch tabs
(should you care to dine) are the personal responsibility of each
attendee and donations will gratefully be accepted to defray the
mandatory costs associated with reserving the space.
At the conclusion of the Life Celebration, those who care to, may join
family and other friends, as they take the short drive over to Rollins
College Campus where the ashes will be joined into the Lake, from Dinky
Dock, in accordance with Mare’s wishes.
If you would like to attend the party at Dubsdread, it is important you
kindly R.S.V.P. to WANZIE prior to 11:AM on Saturday so the facility
can be properly prepared.

THE CRITICS HAVE SPOKEN:
“Metaphors
hit like cold, hard day in Jesus Hopped the A Train, the combustive
drama by Stephen Adly Guirgis, in a co-production of Empty Spaces
Theatre Co. and the Warren Acting Company. . .There’s too little
theater as fierce as this.
-- Elizabeth Maupin, Orlando
Sentinel
“Empty
Spaces stakes out the high ground on Serious Theater in Orlando. Jesus
Hopped The A Train is a meaty and complex drama, if a bit blunt. . . at
its root “Jesus” reworks the classic Greek tragedies with a hero who
gets kneecapped by the Gods.”
-- Charles Gauze, Ink19
Archikulture Digest
“Jesus
Hopped The A Train” is a consistently gripping piece, both as a prison
and courtroom drama, and also as it explores the way people grasp at
religion as our last hope for coping in a life shattering situation --
though not always in ways recognizable by your neighborhood. ….There
are a lot of moments in this play that are likely to haunt you long
after the production is over.”
-- Michael W. Freeman, Editor, The
Reporter – The Ledger (10/08)
“Prisoners
of Life…so clever is Guirgis’ dialogue that we get rolled up in the
quickly paced action, leaving the unanswerable heavy stuff to linger in
the mind: When is killing wrong? When is killing right?. . .The
ensemble cast members admirably anchor their well-cast characters. .
.There are more than a few moments (like this) in the play – not
knowing whether to laugh or cry at the inhumanity of humanity.
That’s
the signature of director John DiDonna, who worked in collaboration
with Seth Kubersky and Joel Warren to present the local premiere of the
Guirgis sensation.”
-- Lindy T. Shepherd, Editor, Orlando
Weekly (10/16/08 issue)
"Best place
to see something edgy: Empty Spaces Theatre Co., which may not have a
permanent home but has a permanent place in audiences' hearts as the
theater company most likely to introduce them to a weird new world.
>From Stripped to Bent to Beckett, Empty Spaces has prodded
theatergoers
into thinking and feeling — which is what theater is about."
-- Elizabeth Maupin, Orlando
Sentinel (10/3/08)

Nowhere are the
effects of the tightening purse string more evident then in the
sparsely populated theater venues throughout greater Orlando. I have attended many shows over
the past two months and have been terribly disappointed at the turn
out. Every theater in town is hurting.
So I want to entreat you; when you do decide to spend you hard earned
and too-far-stretched money on an evenings’ entertainment,
please give first consideration to attending a live theatrical
production.
Hollywood will survive this economic slump, and so will most
nightclubs, but your favorite theater or performing troupe may not.
Especially the grass roots organizations and the independently produced
shows.
All the movies you
may wish to see will be cheaper when viewed on Pay-Per-View or through Netflix.
You can just as easily see a film a year from now as you can this week.
A cocktail at the Footlight Theatre costs less than a bag of popcorn at
the movies. The Cineplex will survive. The movie will be available in
some form forever. But a live show in Orlando has a rather short window
of opportunity, both for you to experience it, as well as for the
usually fledgling troupe to recoup their production costs.
So please – when you are able to do so – choose live theater.
And
speaking of live theater, I am so very happy to report that Orlando’s
own Mark Baratelli has been cast in the role of "Herod" in the National
Tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Rehearsals start Oct 30 and the tour runs mid-November 2008 through
July 2009. While the tour does not come through Orlando it does come
close. You can catch Mark (and John and Luke and Paul) in the following
Florida venues in March of 2009:
Van Wezel Hall Sarasota
March 24th
Peabody Hall Daytona Beach
March 25th
Saenger Theatre Pensacola March 26th
Ruth Eckerd Hall Clearwater March 28th
King Center Melbourne
March 29th
I will run this information again after the first of the year. In
meantime, I wish to offer my sincere congrats to this very talented
Pumpkin.
For the complete nationwide Superstar schedule, please log
onto: http://www.thejcstour.com/schedule.html
Also, Mark’s arts and cultural blog has some really great snaps of the
new TKTS booth in Times Square. Here's one:

>From
its former dilapidated construction trailer-turned-box office, the
popular TKTS booth has sold more than 26 million half price/same day
tickets to fill otherwise empty theater seats while at the same time
making attending a Broadway show more affordable and more accessible to
a broader cross section of people. Since it’s inception in the early
1970’s the TKTS booth has generated more than 1 billion dollars in
ticket revenue.
The new booth, which opened just yesterday (Thursday, October 16th)
amid great fanfare, features 12 windows and sports a rooftop of 27
all-glass steps on which people may sit and and take in the ongoing
show that is Times Square. At night the red translucent steps are
illuminated from beneath, resulting in a fabulous and appropriately
flashy new landmark for Broadway.
For those of you familiar with TKTS, here’s the best news; the once
“cash-only” ticketing service now accepts credit cards! So does
the
WANZIE.com online box office, by the way, so why not log onto it right
now and purchase a ticket to a live theatrical event happening right
here Central Florida this very weekend. You may also scroll back up and
check out THE WORLD IN BRIEF section for
information on how to order tickets for shows being put on by friends
of the gram for which sales may not be available from our box office.
If you’re really broke; check out the FREE play readings listed in THE WORLD IN BRIEF. But
please…
…Attend the THEATER!
